Rock & Roll – the inspiration of Donatella Versace

Throughout the ages, women have been pampered by men; and today, fashion designers adorn them in every possible way. The fairer sex comes in all shapes and sizes. Not all can boast of curves to raise eyebrows. The shapelier ones want their already curvaceous figures enhanced while the not-so-fortunate try desperately to hide their flaws.

And that, my friends, is where fashion designers come in.
Every fashion designer has his/her own unique style of designing and today’s high octane world of fashion includes distinguished names like Hemant Trivedi, Rohit Bal, Ritu Kumar, and Manish Malhotra. And on the international scene: Donatella Versace, Tommy Hilfiger, Valentino, John Galliano and Ralph Lauren. They thread, weave, turn and twist and mould the female form into indescribable loveliness.

Today’s fashion designers have breached the boundaries of imagination and gone beyond the mundane to bring a remarkable variety to the world of glamour. And yet there is no end in sight; the fashion world is always looking for new talent.

The world of fashion is immense and as diverse as can be. Many people are of the notion that fashion is limited to clothes. Not so. Fashion is what makes one’s personality - from your head to your toes. And that means your brand of hat, that designer necktie you are not wearing, and your choice of shoes. You may be decked in the very best and most expensive ensemble but that wrong shade of lipstick will earn you the label of a ‘horror.’ Every fashion designer must know and maintain balance and harmony.

One of the indisputable luminaries in today’s world of international fashion is Donatella Versace. Born in Calabria, Italy on May 2nd, 1955 Donatella is the younger sister of slain designer Gianni Versace. Captivated by fashion at a very young age, this gifted designer teamed up with her brother and shot to fame when she took the Versace label to heights as yet unreached by others. Her rise was meteoric. After the death of her brother, she took charge of the company, and displayed an uncanny talent for public relations. Using celebrities like Elton John, Madonna, Demi Moore and many others, she equated Versace with stardom and turned a crumbling Versace into the empire it is today.

Her extremely sexy styles continue the practice of blending fashion with Rock & Roll – a trend started by her brother, Gianni. Her customers are well groomed and sexy and bold enough to be the focus of attention anywhere they go. The front rows of her fashion shows are almost always occupied by a galaxy of stunning stars. Some of her more famous clients comprise Elizabeth Hurley, Camilla Parker-Bowles, the uninhibited Madonna, Christina Aguilera and Elton John. The late Princess Diana too was once part of her clientele.

Today, Donatella efficiently manages the roles of mother to two children and businesswoman. Her designs occupy a special place in the enchanting world of fashion. She has achieved universal appreciation and fame for her work and is always setting higher goals for herself.
She is often heard to quip:

My inspiration is still Rock & Roll, but now it’s lady Rock & Roll. The look is more refined, and more glamorous.

She adamantly states that baggy styles and androgynous fads are a definite no-no at Versace. She goes in for short skirts, plunging necklines and daring slits. Her choice is strong colours like black or white which make a big impact, and she favours bold prints of feminine florals.

She strongly advises wearing skirts that fall a few inches above the knee, adding that patent leather along with beads or glittering sequins should never be passed up as they are an excellent way to attract attention. She herself is known for her flashy prints, courageous slits, and provocative sexuality.

Donatella directs the production of a number of collections every year. She also owns ‘Versus,’ a company which was given to her by her brother and which has gone from success to success in the last ten years. She is separated from her husband Paul Beck by whom she has two children, but the ex-husband continues to attend to Versace’s advertising.

Donatella Versace is the brains behind the chic hotel, Palazzo Versace, in Australia. This hotel, which means ‘Versace Palace’, opened in September 2000 and carries the Versace seal. It is the only 8-star luxury hotel in the world and has 200 hotel rooms and suites and seventy-two neighbouring condominiums, three restaurants and a private marina.

This glamorous designer has homes in various parts of the world and is leading a life that only the very rich can live.

Accessory design: Is this a career to follow?

Fancy designing a tiara for the Miss India pageant? Or some really groovy eyewear that will send the fashion barometer rocketing? Or car styling that will be the talk of the town? If your answer’s yes, there’s a cool career you can make for yourself in accessory design.

WHAT IS ACCESSORY DESIGN?

Accessory design is a supportive activity of fashion. Fashion, conventionally, has to do with apparel and apparel-based products. But accessory design comes under the umbrella of fashion.

What it means is this: accessory design includes items like jewellery, shoes, footwear or bags. None of these come under apparel, yet they come under the larger umbrella of fashion.

ZONES FOR ACCESSORIES

And there are so many zones of the human body for which you can design so many accessories. If you look at the human body, you can categorise it into zones like the head, neck and shoulders, waist, hands and legs.

The head: For the head zone, you can design products like hats, head gear, eyewear, earphones, hair clips, as well as jewellery on the forehead or earrings.

The neck and shoulders: You could design products like jewellery or scarves. Each culture has its own way of designing accessories. For example, the Indian way is to use long or short chains around the neck. In ancient times, Egyptians used metallic spirals around the neck.

For shoulders, you could create sari pins or brooches. Also, bags that you hang from the shoulder.

The hands: You can have armlets, finger rings, bangles, wrist bands and clutch purses.

The waist: These could range from the traditional gold belt or patti or cummerband to the contemporary belts, mobile pouches, betelnut pouches, pockets for iPods and the like.

The legs: You can have toe rings, anklets, footwear which can be formal, semi formal or casual.

All these come under personal and body accessories.

LIFESTYLE ACCESSORIES

But the other category of accessory design includes lifestyle accessories (secondary zones) like cell phones, cars, houses and their interiors. The current trend is the evolving from personal to secondary accessories. So, from watches and jewellery, the move has been towards writing instruments, signature brand of bathroom accessories and the like. Soon, we may even have customised cars!

THE DESIGN PROCESS

Designers work 4-6 months ahead of the market, since it takes that much time from the conceptual stage to the actual physicality of the product. For example, right now, they must be working towards products that will be available in 2011 or even 2012.

Designers begin with visualising or ‘dreaming the product’. If it is a watch they want to create, they would consider what materials to use, whether mineral glass or plastic or metal, for example.

Then comes the ‘inspiration’ stage. They could be inspired by aqua or a peacock, say. From the inspiration stage, they derive the form. The next step is conceptualisation of the product. The next stage is design detailing where they get into the finer points like what the finish should be, what the size, what the locking mechanism, or packaging, or numbers.

After this, it is mock-up stage. At this point, there may be corrections to be made: a watch may look good in a sketch, but not as a product. So, this is when you can fine tune it to make it look better.

After the mock-up, you do some user analysis: take it to the user and ask — can you afford the price, does the watch meet your expectations, is this innovative? The trend, earlier, was that the market research was done first, even before you began. Now, you start with some amount of user research, and go back to the user after the mock-up. You make the required changes and come up with the final finished product or the prototype.

Following this is the stage when the product is launched, after the communication design stage which deals with, among other things, zeroing in on the punchline for the product, advertising, as well as designing the stores in some cases.

Students of accessory design get placed, among many other options, in automobile companies, and companies dealing with jewellery, watches, mobile phone handsets. Depending on skills, they may start at salaries of Rs 20,000-25,000. After some years, many start their own design consultancy/entrepreneurship.

A review of – Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology

Away from the maddening crowd of Bangalore city and situated in cozy Yelahanka, is the compound that houses the Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology and the prestigious Mallya Aditi International School, both founded and managed by the Ujwal Trust.

From the outside it looks as though one has stepped into a quaint colonial resort, but as we enter inside, one gets floored by its wide open spaces, verandahs that double up as galleries exhibiting student’s work, cozy corners where students, artists and faculties hang out discussing everything from design to music to everyday life.

Srishti’s culture is very liberal and that encourages students to think, question, experiment and challenge set principals to harness the artistic and intellectual potential of each individual. A multi-disciplinary approach inculcates self-initiated learning, independent thinking and expands perspectives. Regular interaction with design studios, production and distribution centers, community projects, retail establishments and industry forms a vital bridge between Srishti and the world. The pedagogy is multi-disciplinary, research-oriented, self-initiated, self-directed and often self or peer-assessed, exploratory and experimental, contemporary and radical with sufficient exposure to the Liberal Arts.

The best part of studying in Sristhi is that one gets to interact with mentors and teachers of such high caliber. The faculty members are extremely friendly, are on first name basis with the students and treat them as members of their family. Then there are the Artists-in-Residence and Research Associates, experienced research professionals or alumni of Srishti who are back to the campus to “earn while they learn”. This interaction helps the students to be in constant touch with the industry and keep up with new and critical innovations in the field of art and culture using real world projects. The next best feature is its state-of-the-art library with an extensive collection of books, international journals and audio-video resources. Also attached is a computer center where students can research the net, scan, photocopy inspirations from the Library. Srishti also has a textile workshop with varied looms, a dyeing/printing unit, computer labs and a metal workshop in-house. It also has access to a fully equipped furniture workshop in Bangalore for making prototypes, exhibition structures and installations.

Now for the Courses offered at Srishti:

Foundation Studies Program (FSP): This two-year course exposes the students to a holistic and creative learning process that concentrates on the building of basic technical and conceptual skills in art, design and technology. On completion the students can choose to study further at Srishti by opting for a specialty in the PDP or can leave with a Certificate of Completion in FSP.

Eligibility:
12th Standard pass. Number of Seats: Max. 100

Professional Diploma Program (PDP): Two and half year specialized Professional Diploma Programs offered at present are:

• Visual Communication Design
• Product and Interface Design
• Furniture and Interior Design
• Textile Design
• Digital Video Production
• Animation and Visual Effects
• Sangama Interdisciplinary Lab

Eligibility: Students who have completed the Srishti Foundation Studies Program, Direct Entry from students who have completed the equivalent of Srishti’s FSP, graduates from other art and design schools, or have professional work experience and an interest in art and design education.

Advanced Diploma Program (ADP): The post graduate Advanced Diploma Programs offered at present are:

• Experimental Media Arts (offered by CEMA),
• Design in Education (offered by CERTAD),
• Transcultural Design (joint collaboration with L’Ecole de Design, Nantes Atlantique, France)

Eligibility: Graduate Degree in any discipline. All programs are research oriented programs for professionals and graduates.

Srishti also has partnerships with over fifteen prestigious Art & Design institutions across the globe. Students who apply for such exchange programmes must fulfill certain criteria and if accepted will receive a tuition waiver. This programme affords students international exposure and provides for a global learning experience.

Admission process:

FDP: Once the applications are received and reviewed the students are called for an entrance test (aptitude test which would test the student’s logical thinking, drawing & colour skills, visualization skills and language skills). It would be held in six centers across India at present – Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Guwahati, Kochi and Bangalore. Those who succeed in the Entrance Test are called to Bangalore for the Portfolio Review and Interview. The quality of the portfolio determines the student’s eligibility for admission.

Application Process for International Applicants: Applications along with SAT scores would be reviewed. Portfolio with 20 pieces of work including two mandatory paintings of a transparent glass bottle and a landscape/cityscape from real life should be submitted on a CD. The interview would be conducted on Skype.

Professional Diploma program: the selection process involves a Portfolio review and Interview. Selection for the Advanced Diploma Program is based on Application essays, Portfolio review and Interview. Application forms for all courses are available now.

Portfolio Requirements: The portfolio should demonstrate skills in drawing, material and various medium also thinking / conceptual skills. It should include a range of 2D and 3D work. Each work should be accompanied by specifications such as its size, medium and the year in which it was done. All work that is submitted needs to be done by the applicant, and arranged in chronological order.

The Genesis of National Institute of Design

In the early 50s, the Government of India invited the renowned American design team that included the late Charles  and Ray Eames to recommend a program of design taining to serve as an aid to the Indian Industry. The Eames’ travelled around the country, studied and analysed local traditions and culture and submitted their report in 1958. Based on their document ‘The India Report’, the Indian government under the auspices of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry set up the National Institute of Design in 1961 as an autonomous national institution for undergraduate and posgraduate education, training and consultancy services in industrial design and visual communication. Since then, the institute has also entered into collaborations with more than 39 international design institutes.

India has two designers per million people vis-à-vis  125 in Finland and  90 in Japan.  Today, India produces 4.5 lakh engineers and 1 lakh MBAs pe year. However, in terms of designers, there is a deficit. The country’s requirement is 10,000 designers per year, yet the number of designers trained every year is less than 1000. To bridge this deficit NID,  has proposed to set up four new NIDs

In its 50th year, the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, has its eyes on new streams such as universal, sustainable and services design. The institute is set to introduce a two year certificate programme in photography,other challenging and emerging fields such as universal design (designing for the benefit of the old and the physically challenged) and sustainable design. NID plans to set up a universal design research chair. Services design (design for hotels, railways etc) is another area NID is investigating into. The Jamsetji Tata-NID Universal Design Research Chair is already in place for research in the areas of design for the elderly, for rural health and digital inclusion, for children with learning disabilities, barrier free access and environmental design.

For students at NID, the institute offers a crossdisciplinary approach to learning. There’s a lot of room to experiment with other disciplines. There’s something to be learnt from everybody. Everybody’s work inspires you and helps you come out with more ideas. The courses allow students, to experiment with other disciplines such as graphics, visuals, product design and even art.

Programmes: NID offers professional education programmes at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels with five faculty streams and 17 diverse design domains. The fouryear graduate diploma programme in design (GDPD) is open to students after Class 12 or equivalent such as AISSCE/IB/ICSE. The programme is offered in the following areas:

  • Industrial design (product design, furniture and interior design, ceramic and glass design)
  • communication design (graphic design, animation film design, film and video communication, exhibition design)
  • textile, apparel and lifestyle design.

The twoto two-and-a-half year postgraduate diploma programme in design (PGDPD) is for graduates from the fields of:

  •  architecture, technology, engineering, fine and applied arts, information technology and computer sciences.

The yearly expenses for the GDPD work out to Rs. 2,10,800/-  and for the PGDPD course it is Rs. 2,55,800/-.

Extracurricular: The institute organises a `culture day’ once a year wherein students from across India showcase the culture of their states. RGB is the design festival that brings together over 1400 creative young minds of the country.
Students from India’s foremost institutes come together for a three-and-a-half day exchange of ideas and experiences. RGB provides a platform for inter-college networking through exhibitions and competitive events. In addition to this it hosts a unique series of workshops and interactive sessions with professionals and experts in the fields of design and design education.

Infrastructure: The main campus is located in Ahmedabad. The postgraduate campus in Gandhinagar offers courses in transportation and automobile design, toy and game design etc. The R & D campus is located at Bengaluru. It offers courses in information and interface design, design for digital experience etc.

Rank 1 NIFT - B.Des 2011 - Delhi

To prepare for the NIFT Entrance Examination, I attended the one-month Creative Ability Test summer workshop and the week long Situation Test workshop at AFD and also attended a 5-day Situation Test workshop at another Institute in Delhi. The experience at AFD was amazing and the faculty is brilliant. The support I got from AFD was very encouraging and of great help. The atmosphere in the classes is very friendly. Anupriya this side. ! was in your Delhi centre for , weekend PG coaching course. I had appeared for NID PG and CEED, and i am very happy to tell you that thanks to AFD have cleared NID PGDPD for Graphic Design and New Media Design., and qualified CEED with an All India Rank of 38, score of 61 on 100 and a percentile of 98.2. I know I have not been in contact much since the coaching ended..but I attribute it to my hectic college n internships n placements. So anyway...i"d really like to thank the entire AFD team for their guidance, help n support. Al the effort u guys took in getting guest lecturers from India n abroad, n d teaching material n resident faculty was remarkable! it was all because of you guys that this was possible. i have been a part of AFD since 2007 (my NIFT days)....n i have never been disappointed ever since. Julie..u have been really helpful..coz u let me join d classes initially 4 a test run..without payment just cause u had faith in me..n i am really grateful 2 u for that.

Dear AFD!! First of all I would like to introduce about myself I am Anubhav Ganguly I am from Allahabad and I am registered student of AFD.I have enrolled for the program NIFT/NID Ug Combo Pack 2008.

AFD has truly given me a hope to entering into the top Indian Fashion colleges. Earlier when for the first time I gave my entrance test for NIFT 2007 I didn't knew a single thing about the paper and how about it should be approached, the type of questions that will be coming and how to maximize my chances of getting into some of the good fashion colleges. I came to know about AFD as i was seriously needed a help to get my next attempt a successful one. Though I have yet waiting for my results. I came to know about AFD through google search and frankly speaking I searched a lot of coaching institutes before deciding at last going with AFD. According to the quality, content and fees wise AFD was the best according to my needs. There was range of options that students can choose according to his/her needs which i felt the best about.

When I received my first consignment for my particular course it kind of generated some inner confidence in myself and from that moment I started thinking that i can really make it condition If I work hard. I particularly choose AFD because they have some of best faculties who can help you in their best possible way they can. The mock tests is the most which helped me to know what is NIFT/NID all about .I would like to gratify my special thanks to the AFD members who boosted a lot confidence in myself and fairly know this much with their continuous help I did a lot better than my 2007 NID paper. The books they provided right from the Drawing Ability to Creative ability were sure speaked for themselves. If one really solves them and go through it sincerely I believe that he has the greatest chances in getting to any of the premium fashion or design Institutes. Their part of labour is truly speaking for themselves because they the highest number of student ratio who cracked NIFT/NID examinations according to my personal sources than any other coaching institutes. I would surely recommend any budding designer or fashion designers who really want to get into colleges like NIFT/NID should go for AFD.

I only feared that the questions that are asked are not really very difficult to attempt. But thanks to AFD once again the practice with their mock papers made my fear vanished as soon as I saw the paper. I was just scared that may all the ideas come into my mind just for 3hours during which Iwas attempting the paper because it's only ideas and a creativity that can only make u sail smoothly which I believed.

Once i started attempting the question Thanks to God that my ideas and creativeness started to flowing in my mind rapidly

hello mam, My AIR is 570 and i am into the nift banglore campus in the accessory design (business and corporate) dept. my experience through every phase was really cool and comfortable but my most important period had been the coaching at kottayam. since i got 2 know 'bout everything regarding the nift's entrance there only so it was the backbone of my success. henceforth i really feel it not only necessary but compulsory 4 all hard core aspirants of all the design schools as its been the most important factors in my sucess not only at nift but also symbiosis, pearl & apeejay inst. of design really mam i'm very very thakful 2 u. the only suggestion ... plz have ur programs of short periods in delhi and other places.

And today after noon, IDC, IIT Bombay results are announced for their M.Des program. Thankfully, i got the admission in their M.Des, Interaction Design program also. i m glad to be the student of Afd who taught me how to walk on the zig-zag road of NIFT. The competition was really tough because there were limited seats and too much students. Inspite of tough competition afd explored our skill and made us master over toughness. I was having the skill and effort but that was of no use unless there is confidence which i got from Afd classes.I thank you very much for the efforts which Rajiv sir and Afd made to make our base strong to chase nift situation test. Finally i m in nift and i too got selected in symbiosis. But going in nift bcoz my dream was NIFT and afd helped me to achieve my dream. Thank you teacher's and thank you AFD.

Hello Julie Madam,

How are you? Hope you are doing fine.

I just got back from Delhi. I had my counselling for NIFT on the 20th of June. And guess what Ma'am, I got Fashion Design at Hyderabad! I got the design course of my choice though as centre I would have preferred Mumbai due to the distance. But I am very happy and also quite excited! Our term starts on the 10th of July. So I shall be leaving for Hyderabad in the first week of July probably. I would like to thank you for all your help and guidance! Your classes and your teaching was a real boon! I dont know if that really sounds right but in short THANK YOU Ma'am!!

Hi Julie Madam,

Hope you are just fine. I was able to get the IGP package only two days before the second round. I wanted to tell you that I have been selected for pearl. I give its credit to you and AFD. All the packs really helped me. In the situational test i.e., in a group of 5 people, was given to design a chair and table. We made a chair in the shape of a colour palette and table in the shape of scissors. It looked totally cool. Then in the interview I was asked about what we made. They asked me about my famous industrialist, I said I dont know much about them but fashion designers. So they asked me about them. I talked about Manish Malhotra, JJ Valaya. and many more questions. It was fun. They saw my portfolio and then asked me whats the meaning of my name when I was leaving. I told them its deep- anti, antim deep i.e. The last deep. They told me that means when the world falls in darkness, you are the one who will give light to everyone. It felt very good. In this interview I acted very naturally and did not pretend anything and it worked. One thing I have learned is we should be as we are, not try to pretend thinking people wont like you. People like you as you are. Too much of philosophy!!!! Anyway hope to talk to you soon.
