Question of the Month
---------------------------------------------------

Question:-

Hello! How are you? I hope you remember me. I need your help. Our institute has started a new course in "RETAIL AND EXHIBITION DESIGN" UNDER INDUSTRIAL DESIGN. Initially it was "DISPLAY ANT EVENT DESIGN UNDER COMMUNICATION DESIGN". Now they've made it a broader course they say. Sir initially I wanted to go for product design but now I am really confused between "retail and exhibition" and product. I request you to guide me on that so that I understand both the disciplines clearly before taking a decision. Also I would know which one interests me more and if you think you can refer someone to guide me on this please let me know. I tried searching on the net but didn’t get a clear picture.

Waiting for your reply,

SHIKHA NARANG
MIT, PUNE

Answer :-

Dear Shikha,

Retail and Exhibition Design course at your institute must be modeled on the frame work of Design in Retail Experience course at NID. The Retail sector in the country is booming. The retail sector requires more and more designers, to bring innovative and effective designs into the retail space. This course will teach you to help retailers maximize sales through effective store design and visual merchandising. This is definitely a futuristic course, with tremendous potential. The number of malls opening up will give you a fair idea of the growth in this sector...

Product Design is a familiar and popular stream of Design and still has good job prospects.

Shikha, you may decide on your options, by looking 'within you' - Do you tend to look at spaces and visualise what it may hold or are you the kind of person, who is interested in how and why things work and how things around you may be improved in terms of function and usability?

Find out your area of interest and make your choice. Whatever the field you choose, you will do well, if you have an aptitude for it and work hard.

Wish you all the best!
