WORD OF ADVICE
Updated on: 4th July, 2007

What are the key determinants that students should keep in mind while choosing design colleges for admission ?

Ms. Julie James, Faculty & Director of AFD, has the following suggestion for students: ·

  • Prepare an exhaustive preference list of colleges and courses much before counseling starts.
  • Get first-hand information on the probable colleges. This can be done through visiting college and speaking to senior students.
  • Ascertain whether the particular branch of study has affiliation.
  • If possible, speak to the faculty members of the colleges to decide the branches of interest that will match your aptitude.
  • Check the student-professor ratio.
  • It is important that the faculty members have a PG qualification and are sufficiently experienced.
  • Find the details of the college & hostel fees are within your limits.
  • Verify the library facilities, computer facilities & placement records.
  • Irrespective of the college and the branch, what should matter most is your own academic performance & aptitude.

To have optimum success & avoid failure, one has to develop excellent temperament besides knowledge of the subject and problem solving skills. To achieve this, AFD advice you the following:

  • Have clarity of goal & determination to achieve it. Give top priority to getting into NIFT/NID or other top Design Schools. Develop your own plan (overall blue print) to produce peak results.
  • Do not dilute preparation of any topic because of any factor. Unlike school/board exams you cannot score in NIFT/NID without reaching a certain level of proficiency.
  • Mere understanding of a concept is not adequate. You have to learn to apply these concepts in solving tricky problems. Problems in the Creative Ability Test are not direct application of a single concept. Many CAT problems involve more than one basic concept.
  • Develop your analytical skills. Do not give up visualizing after one or two attempts only. It is only by doing & trying to do visualize in depth that you can improve your creative skills.
  • There is no dearth of books and problems available. One has to draw boundaries and concentrate on quality rather than quantity.
  • Carefully revise concepts and again solve those stumbling block problems you faced during your preparation.
  • Take several Mock Tests in right environment. These are a must to convert your knowledge & skills into marks. This alone will make a difference between success & failure, a good rank & a bad rank
