National Institute of Design-
NID Bhopal
NID Bhopal, or the National Institute of Design Madhya Pradesh, was set up in 2019 to widen access to design education in central India. It functions under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and holds the status of an Institute of National Importance.
Though relatively new, NID Bhopal runs on the same teaching philosophy as its older campuses. Students spend much of their time in studios, working on assignments that involve building, testing, and presenting. Industry projects, field visits, and internships are gradually added, so learning stays connected to professional practice.

Top Courses at NID Bhopal
The BDes program takes four years to complete. Everyone starts with the same foundation year, where they practice sketching, handle basic materials, and learn simple design methods. Specialisation happens only after the foundation year.
Industrial Design is about products and systems. Students spend hours sketching and building models, checking how things will actually be used.
Communication Design covers graphics, animation, and film. The work moves between paper, screen, and camera, depending on the project.
Textile and Apparel Design looks at fabrics from the ground up. Students work on weaving, dyeing, printing, and then move into apparel construction.
The teaching style is not lecture-heavy. Most of the time, students are in studios or workshops, creating and testing. By graduation, they carry a portfolio that reflects this hands-on approach.
NID Bhopal Admission Process
Admission to NID Bhopal is through the Design Aptitude Test. First comes the Prelims, a written exam. Questions are a mix of drawing, visual thinking, and small design problems. Those who qualify are shortlisted for the Mains. The Mains are held at the campus.
Candidates are given a studio exercise to see how they work with materials and ideas. There is also an interview, and in some cases, faculty may go through the portfolio a student brings. The marks from both stages are combined to prepare the final list. Only after that do counselling and seat allotments begin.
Only candidates with a valid higher secondary (10+2) qualification from any recognised board can take admission to the B.Des program. The application form is released online through the official NID admissions portal. Students can select NID Bhopal as one of their campus preferences at the time of applying.
Once the results are declared, counselling and document verification are conducted. Seats are confirmed after payment of the first semester fees. Since the intake is limited, competition for admission is usually high each year.
NID Bhopal Application Process
Applications are filled only on the NID admission portal. A student registers, enters basic details, and selects NID Bhopal in the options. The portal asks for mark sheets, an ID card, a photo, and, if needed, caste or category certificates. Many students run into trouble here because the site rejects files that don’t match the size or format.
The fee is also paid on the same portal, and it differs depending on the category you apply under. After payment, the system generates an application number, which is needed later to download the admit card. If any mistake is noticed, NID sometimes opens a small correction window, but not every detail can be fixed there. Once the form is locked, students wait for the Prelims admit card to be released.
NID Bhopal Eligibility
The B.Des program at NID Bhopal runs for eight semesters. Tuition is charged each semester and generally adds up to about ₹3 lakh a year. Over four years, the total cost including accommodation, mess, etc is usually in the range of ₹20 lakh.
Students also spend on materials such as drawing tools, fabrics, or model-making supplies. Travel for study visits and internships brings additional expenses. Because the institute revises its fee structure from time to time, families are advised to check the current schedule before planning payments.
Scholarships and Financial Aid at NID Bhopal
NID Bhopal does not run a large internal scholarship program, but students can apply for national and state-level schemes. Many make use of fellowships offered to SC, ST, OBC, and minority students by the Government of India. Education loans are also widely taken since NID holds the status of an Institute of National Importance, which most banks recognise. The NID website officially promotes the PM-Vidyalaxmi scheme, a national education loan portal developed by the Department of Higher Education.
Occasionally, external organisations and industry bodies offer need-based or merit-based support, and notices for these are shared with students during the academic year.
NID Bhopal Placements
Since NID Bhopal is a new campus, placement activity is still building up. The placement cell brings in companies during the final year and arranges portfolio reviews and interviews. Students are also expected to approach studios or firms on their own, often through contacts made during internships. Salaries differ widely — communication design students may get offers from media or advertising firms, while textile students usually connect with apparel houses and craft-linked industries. A number of graduates also choose freelance work or higher studies instead of campus jobs.
NID Bhopal Facilities
Each department has its own studio space where students can leave work spread out rather than packing it away every day. Workshops for wood, metal, and clay are available for model-making, while digital labs handle editing software and design applications. There are also photography and computer labs that support course requirements.
The library, called the Knowledge Management Centre, carries books, journals, and digital resources related to design. Students often use it for research before starting project work. Hostel facilities are provided within the campus for both male and female students, along with a mess.
Large courtyards and open spaces double up as work areas when students need to test bigger models or display projects. Temporary exhibitions are often set up there. The auditorium is mainly used for visiting lectures, student presentations, and screenings linked to coursework. Since the campus is still being built in phases, facilities are basic in some parts, but the workshops, studios, and labs are functional enough for projects in all three B.Des streams.
Why afdindia for NID Coaching?
Students usually struggle with two parts. The written test is fast, and many run out of time. Later, in the studio and interview, portfolios stage, applicants often get cluttered with unnecessary work instead of showing a few clear ideas.
Choosing afdindia for NID coaching means preparing under expert guidance with comprehensive study material and proven strategies. afdindia provides specialized coaching for the NID entrance exam to help aspirants secure admission into premier institutes like NID Bhopal and build a successful career in design.
FAQs
How many seats are offered at NID Bhopal?
Around 25–30 seats are available in each of the three streams, so competition for every seat is high.
Can I switch my specialisation after joining?
Students spend the first year in a common foundation. At the end of that, a stream change is sometimes possible, but only if seats are open and performance justifies it.
Does the campus have links with industry yet?
Being a newer NID, the network is still growing. Companies visit for talks and internships, and many students build connections through field projects and faculty contacts.
Are field visits part of the curriculum?
Yes. Students are sent out to study crafts, industries, or user groups. The idea is to observe real situations and bring that back into their project work.
Is hostel accommodation compulsory?
Not compulsory, but most students opt for it since classes and studio work often run late. Staying on campus saves travel time.
What kind of portfolio is expected during the admission process?
Quality is valued over quantity. Admissions panels want to see original ideas, sketchbooks, and evidence of process rather than polished final pieces only.
Do students from non-Science or non-Arts backgrounds face a disadvantage?
No. Design is open to all streams. Success depends on aptitude, creativity, and how you approach problem-solving.
What career paths do graduates usually follow?
Some take jobs through campus placements. Others freelance using contacts made during internships. A few go for higher studies if they want to specialise more. It mostly depends on the portfolio built over the four years.
